Passionate about connecting students to the industry, it was only natural that our international exchanges do the same. For Damielou Shavelle, Jerry Agbinya, Ruby Bourne and Riley Catherall, flying overseas to Popakademie Baden-Württemberg (University Of Popular Music And Music Business) in Germany was an opportunity to not only travel Europe, but learn hands-on alongside industry experts.
Attending the Popakademie International Songwriting Week, the students arrived at Mannheim for the event that occurs only three times a year. The project, run by the Popakademie in partnership with EMI Music Publishing, saw Collarts students write songs in small teams and be mentored by esteemed international songwriters.
As the songs are recorded and produced, vocalists and instrumentalists enrolled in the Popakademie degree programs contributed also to their works, collaborating in professional studios to create a finished piece. The songs written were then pitched to A&R representatives from different record labels, with opportunities to be used in commercials, films and other media where they saw fit.
“The best thing about Popakademie would have to be experiencing to songwriting with students from a different country and getting behind the mic in a studio,” shares Damielou, a Music Performance student who vlogged the international exchange. “On the trip, I learned to accept my work and not be so hard on myself when it comes to lyric writing.”
“I love watching my friends grow on the stage and I love that my teachers are still creating music—it’s so inspiring,” she continued. “Being around other musicians who are so passionate about music like myself is what allows me to grow. I also learned how to say ‘one more beer please’ in German,” she laughed.
