“If you’re interested in animation, I say go for it!”

For Collarts Animation student Harper Renkauskas, a fascination with the magic behind movies like Star Wars became the foundation of a lifelong passion. From experimenting with green screens and spaceship effects on iMovie as a child, to mastering industry-standard software at Collarts, like Maya and Substance Painter, Harper’s journey showcases the power of creativity and determination. We chatted with Harper to learn more about their journey.

What inspired you to study Animation?

Ever since I was a child, I’ve always wanted to create movies, and after watching the behind-the-scenes footage of the Star Wars movies (especially Revenge of the Sith),

I became deeply interested in creating visual effects. I spent a lot of time experimenting on iMovie on my mum's laptop, using greenscreens and attempting to create spaceship effects with models.

This obsession continued throughout high school as I made lots of movies, constantly learning and experimenting. During my first two years of university, I completed a Diploma and Advanced Diploma of Screen and Media (Film and Television), which I absolutely loved and learned so much from. After completing my Advanced Diploma, I enrolled in Collarts' Animation & VFX course to pursue my passion further.

What opportunities have you had since studying at Collarts?

Collarts has provided me with amazing opportunities, including access to excellent facilities with high-performance computers and industry-standard software, like Maya and Substance Painter.
The teachers at Collarts are incredible, with years of industry experience and a wealth of knowledge to share. I’ve also really enjoyed connecting with other students in my course, building a strong creative community.

Who are your biggest influences in the animation world?

My biggest influence is definitely the work of Industrial Light and Magic (ILM). I love how they tell stories visually through their model and texture designs, as well as their incredible skill and precision in creating final shots for films.

What advice would you give to someone interested in animation?

If you’re interested in animation, I say go for it!

There’s so much to learn, and with so many departments involved, there’s something for everyone.

To get started, I recommend learning some basics of Blender, which is free and a great way to dive in before beginning formal studies. The field is vast and exciting, and I can’t wait to keep learning more as I enter my second year at Collarts.

What’s your favourite animated film, series, or game, and why?

My favourite films are definitely the Star Wars movies, thanks to ILM. As for games, Titanfall 1 and 2 are my favourites because they combine incredible gameplay with a beautifully designed universe and stunning art direction in every aspect.

Like Harper, you can turn your passion for animation into a lasting creative career. Collarts' Animation course is perfect for those aspiring to work in film, television, online entertainment or the gaming industry.
