Audio Production is a key component of many industries – from music to film, to live theatre and beyond. It’s equal parts technical skill and creativity, and is one of the many creative fields you can pursue here at Collarts.

While you might have considered using your passion for audio to work in audio recording, touring, live production, or film and TV, there are plenty of other paths out there that may surprise you. Collarts Audio Production Program Leader, Jason Torrens, is here to run us through some unexpected outlets for the audio production skills you can learn at Collarts.

Where are our Audio Production graduates working now?

Over his years at Collarts, Jason has seen countless students graduate. Many of these students have forged fulfilling and successful career paths, but not all of them have taken the most conventional route to get there.

  • Dozens are currently working for audio visual companies, playing a part in corporate events and large-scale installations in iconic Melbourne venues. This path is opened by both industries’ reliance on signal flow – AKA the path taken by audio signals. Jason identifies signal flow as one of the most important concepts you’ll pick up during your time at Collarts, as it can be applied to a huge range of technological industries.
  • Other students work in distribution, using their in-depth knowledge of audio equipment to connect other audio professionals with the tools of the trade.
  • Some work in lighting, which is somewhat of a sister industry to audio. Gaining a grasp on both can make you a powerhouse out in the professional world, and create opportunities for plenty of sound and lighting gigs across the country.
  • One student has a work-from-home gig doing sound design and mixing for big Hollywood films, which Jason acknowledges is a bit of a dream job.
  • As part of the audio production course, students gain a thorough education on the inner workings of the ear. Some graduates have been so inspired by this aspect of the curriculum that they’ve gone on to study and work in the field of audiology.
  • Equally as unexpected is a student who pursued a career in forensics, using their knowledge of audio intricacies to analyse criminal recordings and evidence for Victoria Police.

As Jason explains, “Companies come to us for students.”

Students can begin forging their networks and laying down the foundations of their career path while still completing their courses, and can take advantage of that groundwork to create career opportunities once they graduate.

Reflecting on his own extensive career in the industry, Jason says, “If I had another go at it, I would have found more mentors and more education to speed up my learning in recording and audio. Hence why we curate such an amazing degree to get our students ready, just like we wished we could have had when we were younger.”
