Are you a born storyteller? Our Writing & Directing course is designed for those who can’t wait to write, direct, and create original work for the stage - or breathe new life into contemporary texts and the classics.
Our experienced lecturers, who are currently working in the industry as writers, directors, and award-winning theatre artists, will help you to find your voice and shape your own unique style.
This comprehensive course covers directing and production, theatre studies and dramaturgy, playwriting workshops and script assessing - helping you to build an in-depth knowledge of both writing and bringing a script to life as a director, while laying the blueprint for character, action, performance and production. Learn techniques in rehearsal room practices, directing actors, working with designers, guiding technicians in world-building and bringing transformative stories to life.
Our courses are made to help make you career-ready with pitching and grant writing, and you’ll have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience in sought-after industry placements. You’ll also collaborate with students from other courses to develop a well-rounded understanding of the arts and entertainment industries, and build valuable creative connections to become the theatre-maker of the future.

Scholarships
Scholarships are now available for international students and valid for all international study applications from March 2024. Kickstart your creative studies while we ease the financial load – eligible students can receive up to $11,000 AUD for a Bachelor or up to $3,600AUD for a Diploma.
Eligibility criteria:
Applicants must submit a 300-word statement along with their application explaining why they should be awarded the scholarship.
Approved applicants must comply with their visa conditions and obligations as Collarts students.
Applicants must meet Collarts entry requirements.
Scholarships are limited and awarded at the discretion of the Collarts International Team.
Valid for applications received in 2024.
Students must pay their fees on time to maintain eligibility.
Students must maintain a credit (65%) average or above in their Collarts studies to maintain eligibility.

Craft compelling narratives, dialogue, and characters for various mediums. Possess a keen understanding of storytelling techniques and genres, and collaborate with directors, producers, and other creatives to develop scripts.

Yes, you’ll be writing original works through your study and bringing them to life in collaboration with Acting & Stage Management students on a professional stage.
Primarily stage, however, in the Bachelor there is a major screen unit in the second year of study. Electives are also available.
Yes! Acting Foundations is built into your curriculum from trimester 1. We have designed a course that provides a holistic approach to theatre making, so that Writers and Directors can also gain a deeper understanding of both Acting and Stage Management.
We would like you to present a summary of your written statement at the start of your interview. You can do this however you like - you can simply read what you've written, memorise key points and talk about them with us, or turn it into an informal presentation.
