Phil Bywater is one of the finest saxophonists in Australia; an exciting and dynamic performer. His experience is diverse, encompassing rock, afrobeat, funk, reggae, world music, jazz, free improv, and contemporary classical music. He has toured Australia, the United States, Europe, the South Pacific and South East Asia, and played countless Australian music festivals (Big Day Out, AWME, Byron Bay, Blues and Roots, MONAFOMA, Woodford, Apollo Bay, Queenscliff, St Kilda, Meredith, Fairbridge, Port Fairy, Yalukit Willam Ngargee, Dreaming at the G, Melbourne Indigenous Arts, Brunswick, Wangarratta Jazz and Blues, National Folk) as well as International Arts Festivals in Melbourne, Sydney, Perth, Brisbane, and New Zealand.
Phil has released three independent CDs and appeared on dozens of other recordings as a band member or featured guest. He has performed extensively on radio and television (Rove Live, Spicks and Specks, Alive and Kicking, Denise), performed on TV and movie soundtracks including Crackerjack, Boytown and Judith Lucy’s All Woman and performed and recorded with an array of Australia’s finest musicians.
Phil was a key member of the board of the Melbourne Jazz Fringe Festival from 2005–2009, and was a curator and publicist for the Make It Up Club improvised music series 2004–2007. He has been active in both secondary and tertiary education since 1989, lecturing at VCA, AIM and JMC Academy.
Phil holds a Masters in Music (VCA), Graduate Diploma in Education (Melbourne University), and a Bachelor of Music (VCA), and has been an APRA member since 1993.
