Tom Spender has spent as much time touring around the world as he has in front of a laptop producing innovative and original music on multiple instruments.
After completing an Advanced Diploma of Music Performance on alto saxophone, he signed a record deal with indie Melbourne label, Rubber Records, and signed a publishing contract with Sony/ATV. It was through Sony/ATV that Tommy got his first taste of writing for television, when his track Pure Gold was selected as the music behind the 2005 US superbowl campaign for Olympus. This exposure during the most expensive advertising slot on the planet led to numerous music-writing commissions. During this period, Spender’s live band, Offcutts, had a string of singles added to high rotation on JJJ, was added to various national summer festival bills, and the band had a run of vinyl on rough trade in the US.
As a producer, co-writer and collaborator Tom has worked with a string of compelling artists including: Gotye, Kimbra, M-Phazes, Bertie Blackman, Lior, Clairy Browne, Ella Hooper, Clare Bowditch, Gossling, Sophia Brous, Sahara Beck and an extended list of highly-talented developing artists. In 2013 Tom released his first solo debut work, Modern Pest, on his newly-formed label, Donut Beach Records (with MGM and Comes With Fries Management). The first single from Modern Pest was added to full-rotation airplay on JJJ and led to two national support tours, various remix commissions and an invitation to speak at the 2013 Ubud Writers Festival.
Tom’s involvement with theatre and screen writing has seen him produce numerous scores for various productions including an original score for Malthouse Theatre Company and original scores for video artist, David Rosetzky. His compositions and scores will also feature in a major Australian feature film, set for release in May 2015 and Tom is currently working on sound design and score for a newly-funded documentary feature, which is eight years in the making. Tom is also busy working on a new release for mid 2015 and is an active member of Electric Dreams Studio – a stable of five talented composers working on advertising composition and production, television/film scoring and artist development.
